Our promise
Your data stays on your device.
Compass is a privacy-first app. We collect nothing. No accounts, no ads, no trackers, no servers.
What we collect
Nothing. Compass does not collect, store, or transmit any personal data. There are no servers, no analytics, no advertising SDKs, and no third-party trackers in this app.
Sensor data
Readings from the magnetometer, accelerometer, gyroscope, and rotation-vector sensors are processed entirely on your device to render the compass. None of this data ever leaves your phone.
Location
If you grant location permission, your coordinates are used locally
to compute true north (via the GeomagneticField model
that ships with Android) and to display your address. Location data
is never sent off-device, never logged, never persisted across app
uninstalls.
Reverse-geocoded address
When location permission is granted, Android's built-in
Geocoder service is used to look up an address for
your coordinates. This is a local Android API; the lookup is
handled by your operating system, not by us.
Permissions we ask for
We only request what's strictly required for the compass to function:
- Coarse and fine location — to compute true north and show your address. Optional; magnetic-compass mode works without it.
- Internet — used only by Android's reverse-geocoder service to fetch place names.
- Vibrate — haptic feedback on cardinal-direction crossings and the hold-bearing action.
Storage
App preferences (your chosen theme, units, bearing format, etc.) are stored in Android DataStore, on your device only. Generated share images are temporarily written to the app's private cache and cleaned up by Android automatically.
No ads, no tracking
There is no advertising in Compass. There is no Firebase, no Crashlytics, no Google Analytics, no Meta Audience Network, no AdMob, no Mixpanel, no Amplitude — nothing. We don't know how you use the app, and we'd like to keep it that way.
Children
The app is safe for all ages. Because we collect no data, no special handling for users under 13 (under 16 in some jurisdictions) is required.
Changes to this policy
If this policy ever changes — for example, if a future version of Compass adds an optional online feature — we will update the effective date above and post the new version at this URL before the change takes effect.
